This film should have been in a real sweet spot for me - I love supernatural movies with just touches of horror, particularly when they're a little bit silly, and Robert Wise, who always does a respectable job, directed. It ended up being too self-serious to really be good, or recommendable. If it had followed the book less closely, and dispensed with the legal scenes, it might have been better, but however you do it, the ending is a weird, unlikely bummer. Anthony Hopkins as a hysterical true believer/kidnapper was a pretty interesting part, but he was often over the top (even in scenes when he was too calm and quiet). Too much Exorcist in its DNA. I also felt like the film was excited about Marsha Mason for reasons I didn't understand. Disappointing.
